Every single organism in the world has a Nervous System which helps it function and heal internally and externally. But what makes humans special to that of any other species, is our ability to Understand and Connect to our Nervous System. Like a computer, the human body also comes with an automated program so that we could survive. There is no way, as a species, we would have reached this point without our Nervous System.
From general health to Self-Actualisation, breathing offers infinite benefits - from the beginner looking for mindfulness to the more advanced practitioner seeking truth.
Remember, there’s only one golden rule:
DON’T STOP BREATHING!
Breath work has been studied all over the world and its benefits are clear, which include:
-
One of the most immediate benefits of conscious breathing is stress reduction. Taking slow, deep breaths activates the body’s relaxation response, reducing the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. Conscious breathing helps lower anxiety levels, improves mood, and enhances overall well-being.
-
Conscious breathing techniques such as mindfulness meditation improve focus and concentration. Paying attention to our breath helps calm the mind and reduce distracting thoughts, thereby increasing productivity.
-
Breathing exercises are a powerful tool for emotional regulation. By regulating our breath, we can control our emotions and reactions better. This can be particularly helpful in managing anger, anxiety, and other strong emotions.
-
Dedicated breathing techniques also contribute to better sleep quality. Deep, rhythmic breathing before bedtime can relax the body and mind, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy continuous, restful sleep throughout the night.
-
Conscious breathing exercises improve lung function and capacity. Deep breathing helps to fully oxygenate the body, remove toxins, and promote overall lung health.
-
Breathing techniques have been used for centuries as a natural pain management tool. They can help reduce pain perception and improve tolerance, making them a valuable addition to pain management strategies.
-
Conscious breathing even benefits your digestive system. Deep breaths stimulate the relaxation response, enhancing blood flow to the digestive organs and aiding in better digestion.
The simple act of conscious breathing can yield many benefits for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The next time you feel overwhelmed or stressed, take a moment to pause, close your eyes, and take a few deep, intentional breaths.
Your body and mind will thank you for it.
Jonathan began his journey of healing over a decade ago. He realised early on that the only way to heal others is to first heal yourself. Healing yourself gives one insight into healing others as we aren’t all too different under the skin.
After obtaining a diploma of hypnotherapy and learning Tai Chi, he worked as an instructor at a mental health retreat. This was the perfect introduction to breath work and discovering the impact the quality our own breath has on the quality of our experience.
Breathing is so innate that it is impossible not to experience benefits as soon as you begin. From relaxation to self-actualisation, breathing changes us from the inside out.
